چکیده

In this paper, we develop a method to estimate time-varying treatment e ects in situations where dynamic selection into treatment may confound estimates of the treatment e ect. Doing so, emphasizes an important policy tool, the timing of treatment. We illustrate the challenges in using conventional approaches to control for selection in a static setting for a dynamic setting. The method we develop assumes that the unobservables that jointly determine selection into treatment and the treatment e ects can be modeled through a factor structure. We demonstrate how this method recovers a much richer set of counterfactuals than can be recovered with existing methods. We then apply our method to the study of grade retention using the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study of Kindergartners. We nd evidence of dynamic selection and that the e ect depends both on the time at which the student is retained and the time elapsed since retention. ∗First draft: December 26, 2007. A Framework for the Analysis of Dynamic Treatment E ects : Grade Retention and Test Scores ∗

We develop a simple framework for the analysis of models with dynamic treatment e ects, accounting for both dynamic selection and that the e ect of treatment may di er over time. In the context of our application, the framework permits students who are retained in kindergarten to di er in unobservable ways from students who are retained in second grade. Furthermore, being retained in rst grade ...

How The Timing of Grade Retention Affects Outcomes: Identification and Estimation of Time-Varying Treatment Effects.

In many countries, grade retention is viewed as a useful tool for helping students who fall behind in their achievement. We show how the effect of grade retention varies by abilities, by timing of retention and as time since retention elapses. While existing studies of grade retention also recognize the importance of studying variation by abilities and timing, the existing methods are not well-...

Identification and Estimation of Time-Varying Treatment Effects: How The Timing of Grade Retention Affects Outcomes∗

This paper builds a framework for analyzing models with multiple time-varying treatments when selection into treatment is sequential and varies across treatment statuses. The key challenge is to separate the time-varying effect of treatment from dynamic selection into treatment based on unobservables. To address this problem, we develop a method that is a hybrid between a control function and a...

Task-Induced Involvement in L2 Vocabulary Learning: A Case for Listening Comprehension

The study aimed at investigating whether the retention of vocabulary acquired incidentally is dependent upon the amount of task-induced involvement. Immediate and delayed retention of twenty unfamiliar words was examined in three learning tasks( listening comprehension + group discussion, listening comprehension + dictionary checking + summary writing in L1, and listening comprehension + dictio...

Influence of varying timing angle on performance of an SI engine: An experimental and numerical study

Engine performance depends on two main factors of engine speed and ignition time. Ignition timing can affect engine life, fuel economy and engine power. In this paper, to study engine performance of Peugeot 206 TU3A with comparison ratio of 10.5:1 and displacement of 1361CC in MATLAB software, a two-zone burned/unburned model with the fuel burning rate described by aWiebe function was used for ...
